It was the Saturday afternoon and I had been thinking about what lesson I wanted to teach on Sunday School morning all day. -Nothing was calling out to me as it usually does. -And this week we are going to be combining the Kinder with the 1st Grade classrooms as we are short a teacher. I secretly LOVE this as I get to spend time with my kiddos that I had last year. However, I wanted to have a lesson that would take advantage of the age differences (a 1st kiddo is in a much different place than a Kinder).
Finally, after dinner I said to my daughter, "I think we are just going to focus on how God made each of us uniquely and EXACTLY how he wants us to be". My husband jokingly said..."sounds like a Sunday School Teacher that is phoning it in for the day". Kind of funny..... Yet, I will tell you that the number one thing our Christian Ed Director always tells her teaching team is that if these kiddos get nothing else during their hour in Sunday School than a concept that they are so very precious and loved by God, then we did our job!!!
So, on the week before Palm Sunday we are going to talk about how much, "God loves you!" I want to touch upon the fact that God created each of us with different gifts. -And when we combine those gifts, we can form the most fabulous and glorious team!!!!
Here area few of my favorite books that I like to read on the topic below.
I will start out our morning by gathering on the carpet.
Good Morning Song: We will start our day be singing our cute song that calls out each name so that the kiddos have a chance to say 'hi' independently. The lyrics for my favorite song are as follows. I will do a simple clap and tap our legs beat as we all sing along. I will usually have the kiddos stand up and wave to their friends. Depending upon the crowd and how well they know each other, I may ask them to do different things such as turn around, jump up and down, make a silly face, you know the drill.
Ice Breaker: We will then sit in a HUGE circle. The person who has the ball will be asked to say their name, how old they are, and their favorite ice cream flavor. Each kiddo will then roll the ball to another. We will continue until everybody has a turn. This is a great way to get the kiddos to open up, have fun and feel a little more at ease in their setting.
Read Aloud: I will take a moment to remind the kiddos that God made each and everyone of them exactly how He wanted them to be. -And He wanted everybody to have their own, individual gifts so that they could help each other. Being a bit different from our friends is EXACTLY what God intended! I will continue on to read, "Hunter's Best Friend at School,' by Laura Malone Elliott. I love this book as it talks about 2 friends that are similar, but have a few differences that are starting to cause a problem in school. It talks about how the one friend is able to help the other be, "his best self".
Activity: The kiddos will have a chance to make a HUGE paper chain to decorate the halls of our church. Each kiddo will be asked to write their name on a strip of paper or anything that reminds them of God's Love. They can write of draw!!! This is a great way to keep hands busy while we get to talk about all the wonderful gifts God has blessed us with. We will then put all the paper strips together to make one, LONG chain. We will talk about how our chains would be pretty small if we did not combine them with our friends. This offers a great analogy for how much we can accomplish with God's love in a team.
Take Home Craft: Each kiddo will make a simple Name Mosaic. I found this great idea HERE. All that you will need is a big sheet of paper, glue and tine pieces of paper. This is a super easy craft that will be great for the varying skill levels.
I also have the following activity worksheets that the kiddos can work on. There are some varying ability levels here, as well, so they can pick what they like! You can click on the following for a free printable version!
I can't wait for this special Sunday Morning to share with our precious kiddos. Sunday School Teacher 'phoning it in' or not. We are going to have some great fun and share in the love of the Lord!!!! Amen....
